東京・浅草の顔といえば、やはりこの巨大な赤い提灯。「雷門（かみなりもん）」です。
正式名称は「風雷神門（ふうらいじんもん）」。 門の左右には、風を司る「風神」と、雷を司る「雷神」が怖い顔で睨みをきかせ、お寺を災いから守っています。 （でも、紫乃と小豆には、ちょっと優しそうな顔をしてくれているかもしれませんね。）
朱色の柱と、迫力ある大提灯。 その鮮やかな「赤」と、紫乃（Shino）の「紫」の着物のコントラストは、まさに日本の伝統色そのものです。 足元の小豆（Azuki）も、行き交う人々の活気や、仲見世通りから漂う人形焼の甘い香りに鼻をひくひくさせています。
雷門をくぐれば、そこはもう江戸の情緒が息づく世界。 提灯の下を通る時は、ぜひ真下を見上げてみてください。龍の彫刻が隠されているのをご存知でしたか？
古き良き日本を感じに、浅草散歩はいかがでしょうか。
When people think of Asakusa, Tokyo, the first thing that comes to mind is the giant red lantern: the “Kaminarimon” (Thunder Gate).
Its formal name is “Furaijinmon” (Gate of the Wind and Thunder Gods). On either side of the gate, the Wind God (Fujin) and the Thunder God (Raijin) stand guard with fierce expressions to protect the temple from harm. (However, they might be showing a slightly gentler face to Shino and Azuki!)
The vermilion pillars and the massive lantern create a striking scene. The contrast between that vivid “Red” and the “Purple” of Shino’s kimono perfectly represents the traditional colors of Japan. At her feet, Azuki is twitching his nose, excited by the energy of the passing crowds and the sweet scent of Ningyo-yaki (doll-shaped cakes) drifting from the Nakamise shopping street.
Once you pass through the Kaminarimon, you enter a world where the spirit of Edo still breathes. When you walk under the lantern, don’t forget to look straight up at its bottom. Did you know there is a dragon carving hidden there?
